Inspection of Fuel Pump Drive Gear

Inspect the fuel pump drive gear and bearing as follows: ‪

  1. Ensure the shaft turns freely.
  2. If the shaft binds, the bearing assembly must be replaced.
  3. Examine the drive gear for excessive scoring or other damage.
  4. If the gear is damaged, it must be replaced.
  5. Examine the drive coupling, for cracks, broken alignment tangs, or other damage.
  6. If damage is found replace drive coupling.

Installation of Fuel Pump Drive Gear and Bearing

Install the drive gear and bearing as follows: ‪

Note: The bearing assembly may be installed from either side of the cylinder block opening.

  1. Using tool J 41795, drive the bearing assembly into the cylinder block.
  2. Install the rear snap ring.
  3. Install the coupling.
  4. Install the fuel pump drive gear on one side and half coupling on the other side.
  5. Using a wrench to keep the bolt on the side of the bearing assembly opposite the drive coupling from turning, torque the bolts to 38-42 N m (28-31 lb ft).
  6. Install splash ring.
  7. Install lower front cover.
  8. Install vibration damper. Refer to section .
  9. Install front pulley. Refer to section .
