SERIES 55 CAMSHAFT

The following instructs how to determine if repair or replacement of camshaft is necessary, inspection of camshaft, and installation of camshaft. ‪

Replacement of Camshaft

To determine if repair or replacement of the camshaft is necessary, perform the following procedure. Camshaft bearings are installed in the cylinder block and cannot be serviced. See Figure 25363 . ‪

Replacement of Camshaft Flowchart

Removal of Camshaft

Remove camshaft as follows: ‪

  1. Remove engine. Refer to OEM guidelines.
  2. Drain engine lubricating oil. Refer to section .
  3. Drain engine coolant. Refer to section .
  4. Remove engine fan belts and fan belt tensioner. Refer to section .
  5. Remove front engine mount. Refer to section .
  6. Remove crankshaft pulley. Refer to section .
  7. Remove vibration damper and splash ring. Refer to section .
  8. Remove the rocker cover and arm assembly. Refer to section .
  9. Remove the intake manifold. Refer to section .
  10. Remove the electronic unit pumps. Refer to section .

Note: Rotate the engine 180 . This will allow the cam followers to fall out of the way so that the camshaft may be removed.

  11. Remove oil pan. Refer to section .
  12. Remove flywheel. Refer to section .
  13. Remove flywheel housing. Refer to section .
  14. Remove the TRS pulse wheel. Refer to section .
  15. Remove upper engine cover (and DVB pump gear, if equipped) and the fuel pump drive gear. Refer to section .

    NOTICE:

Remove the camshaft carefully to avoid damaging camshaft bushings. ‪

  16. Attach camshaft pilot, J 4158 to the end of the camshaft. See Figure 25469 .

Inspection of Camshaft and Camshaft Bearings

Inspect the camshaft and camshaft bearings as follows: ‪

  1. Clean all of the removed parts in clean fuel oil.
  2. Ensure that all oil passages are clear.

To avoid injury from flying debris when using compressed air, wear adequate eye protection (face shield or safety goggles) and do not exceed 40 psi (276 kPa) air pressure.

  3. Dry with compressed air.
  4. Inspect the camshaft lobes and journals for scoring, pitting, or flat spots.
    1. If the camshaft is excessively scored, pitted, or worn, it must be replaced.
    2. If the camshaft is not excessively scored, pitted, or worn, reuse the component.
  5. Inspect the camshaft follower for excessive scoring, pitting, or flat spot wear.
    1. If cam followers are excessively scored, pitted, flat spotted or worn, replace cam followers.
    2. If cam followers are not excessively scored, pitted, flat spotted or worn, reuse the components.

Installation of Camshaft

Install the camshaft as follows: ‪

Note: The engine must be upside down to ensure that the cam followers do not inhibit camshaft installation.

  1. Attach camshaft pilot, J 41580 to the end of the camshaft. See Figure 25472 .

  2. Coat the journals of the camshaft with clean lubricating oil.

    NOTICE:

Carefully install the camshaft to avoid damaging camshaft bearings. ‪

  3. Install the camshaft.
  4. Install the fuel pump drive gear (and DVB pump gear, if equipped) and DVB upper engine cover. Refer to section .
  5. Install the TRS pulse wheel. Refer to section .
  6. Install the flywheel housing. Refer to section .
  7. Install the flywheel. Refer to section .
  8. Install the oil pan. Refer to section .
  9. Rotate the engine 180 to the up right position.
  10. Install the electronic unit pumps. Refer to section .
  11. Install the push rods.
  12. Install each valve bridge, rocker arm, and shaft assembly. See Figure 24712 . Torque post bolts to 57-61 N m (42-45 lb ft).
  13. Adjust valve lash. Refer to section .
  14. Install the intake manifold. Refer to section .
  15. Install the rocker cover and arm assembly. Refer to section .
  16. Install the splash ring and vibration damper. Refer to section .
  17. Install the crankshaft pulley. Refer to section .
  18. Install the front engine mount.
  19. Install the engine fan belts and fan belt tensioner. Refer to section .
  20. Fill engine coolant to the proper level. Refer to section .
  21. Fill engine lubricating oil to the proper level. Refer to section .
