To prevent a buildup of potentially volatile vapors, keep the engine area well ventilated during operation.
Open the fuel filler cap to release pressure in the fuel system. Replace and tighten the cap.
Using a 36-mm socket wrench insert, unscrew the cap on the main fuel filter and remove it, along with the filter element. Pull both the cap and the filter element a short distance out of the filter housing. See Figure
. Allow the fuel to drain off the filter into the housing.

Removing the Filter Housing
Pull the dirt collector out of the filter housing using the tabs on either side.
To prevent damage to the filter housing, do not allow dirt to collect in it. Do not empty the dirt collector into the filter housing.
Clean the cap and the dirt collector.
Remove the assembly valves on the feed and return lines. Mark both sides of each connection with paint pens.
Collect any fuel that runs out of the filter housing or assembly valves.
Remove the fuel suction and return lines. Mark both sides of each connection with paint pens.
Collect any fuel that runs out of the filter housing or fuel lines.
